Want to Save America? Some Ideas for Action

Dear Democrats of Knox County,

Thank you everything you are doing to save our country. There are some signs that our efforts are having an impact, despite Friday’s disappointing Senate vote on the continuing resolution. Turning the tides will require that many people are courageous and that each of us does whatever we can. Not easy, but important!

Still, we all need to be careful to take breaks and care for ourselves.  We can’t afford for anyone to burn out.

Here are some ideas on ways you can choose to take action. Select the one(s) that work best for you:

  • Make phone calls, daily or as often as you can, to our Senators (Moreno and Husted) and Congressman (Balderson). To simplify this:
    • Download and install the “5calls” app (available in the Apple app and Google Play stores) and select an issue that concerns you. You will then see the phone numbers to call and recommendations on what to say.
    • Get a Daily Calls email with details of recommended call(s) for that day. When we all call about the same issue, we may increase our impact. To be added to the list to receive the Daily Calls email, contact slonczewski@kenyon.edu
    • You can always find contact information for our elected officials in Washington and Columbus here.
  • Join the Signs on the Square weekly protest, every Saturday, 1-1:30 pm, in Mount Vernon’s public square.
  • Go to other area protests. In addition to Signs on the Square, there are several protests scheduled in central Ohio. To see the list, click here, and check back frequently.
  • Participate in boycotts of companies that are supporting Trump’s agenda. This article from Newsweek lists some companies that have supported Donald Trump. Show the power of our collective purses by avoiding spending money with them, if you can.
  • Talk to your neighbors. There are some sensible people who voted for Trump who now may be very receptive to common-sense conversations about the issues we have faced since January 20.
  • Get to know your Democratic Party precinct captain (here’s a list). If there is no precinct captain assigned for your area, consider becoming one!  To learn more, contact me.
  • Get involved at the local level. Go to public meetings – your township, village, city government, or school board meetings.
  • Educate yourselvesHere are some resources that some of us rely on for information.  Leave a reply at the bottom of that page to share  resources that we may have missed.

Let’s all do as much as we can. Continue to exercise and strengthen our democracy muscles. Talk with a stranger about how decisions in Washington are affecting us in Knox County. Volunteer at a food bank or anywhere that helps people in these scary times. Be kind.

Please don’t throw your hands up in the air and assume Trump will get away with it all. We are still a democracy with a rule of law. And we must insist on keeping it.

Again, thank you for everything you are doing.  Be safe.
